Frances US.

Hundreds of Russian naval commanders and their well-dressed partners take part in annual Sevastopol Officer's Ball to mark 'the fifth anniversary of the return of Crimea to Russia'

6th annual Sevastopol Officers' Ball took place on Sunday at the Mikhailovsky Battery in occupied Crimea
Russia says 1,000 people attended, including 150 officers and 130 civilian couples who took part in dancing

Attaches of 15 foreign countries including allies Venezuela, Syria, and Armenia were also there, Moscow said
Russia 'annexed' Crimea in 2014 following a revolution in the country, though the UN views it as an occupation

By CHRIS PLEASANCE FOR MAILONLINE

PUBLISHED: 16:02 BST, 17 June 2019 | UPDATED: 17:02 BST, 17 June 2019

Hundreds of well-dressed guests packed into a military fort overlooking Sevastopol on Sunday as Russia hosted its annual Officers' Ball in Crimea.

Foreign attaches from 15 countries - including the likes of Venezuela, Syria and Armenia - joined naval officers, their wives and civilian couples at the event, to mark what Moscow describes as 'the 5th anniversary of the return of the Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia.'

Russia claimed to have annexed Crimea in 2014 in a referendum held after President Vikor Yanukovych, a close ally of Moscow, was ousted amid protests. The move is not recognised by the UN which considers Russia's presence in Ukraine to be an occupation.

The ball also marked the 236th anniversary of the founding of Sevastopol and the 220th anniversary of the birth of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, TASS news agency said.

Russian naval officers and their wives mixed with foreign attaches and civilian couples as Russia hosted the sixth annual Officers' Ball in Sevastopol, Crimea, on Sunday

Image
Moscow said that representatives of 15 foreign countries - including the likes of Syria, Venezuela and Armenia - attended the event, after being allowed in for the first time last year (pictured, a naval officer and his partner)

Image
The ball was held in part to mark what Moscow describes as the 'the 5th anniversary of the return of the Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia'. The UN views Russia's presence in Ukraine as an illegal occupation

Image
Preparations have been underway for the event for three months, with 150 military couples and 130 civilian pairs given choreography classes so they could take part in the dancing displays

Image
Aside from the dancing, the evening also featured several parades alongside musical and vocal performances

Image
The annual event is held in the Mikhailovsky Battery - a military fort overlooking Sevastopol which was used in its defence in the Crimean War and during the Second World War

Image
As well as marking the 'annexation' of Crimea, Moscow said the event was to commemorate the 220th anniversary of the birth of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and the 236th anniversary of the founding of Sevastopol

Image
The ball was first held in 2013, a year before Russian troops appeared in Crimea, but Moscow kept up the tradition and uses it as a way of legitimising its claim over the territory

Image
Alongside Russian officers and their guests were representatives from Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Laos, Mali, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Sudan, Russia said

Image
Guests, who have practised for months, take part in choreographed dances inside the Mikhailovsky Battery fort overlooking Sevastopol on Sunday night

Image
The fort overlooks Sevastopol harbour - one of the main reasons Russia annexed the territory, since it provides year-round access to the Mediterranean, as all of Moscow's other ports freeze over

Official celebrations to mark the anniversary of the annexation took place back in March, when Putin flew from Moscow to open two new power stations on the Black Sea peninsula.

Preparations for the ball have been underway for three months, including parades, musical performances and choreographed dances. The artistic theme this year was 'star of captivating happiness'.

In total 150 officer couple and 130 civilian couples took part in the dancing, which happened at the Mikhailovsky Battery overlooking Sevastopol.

Brigadier General Ayman Muhsan Khumeidi, military attaché of the Syrian embassy in Russia, said: 'Awesome city, hospitable people.'

Image

Image
While members of the Russian Black Sea fleet are invited to the event, Russia's TASS new agency said most of the attendees are actually civilians from Sevastopol itself

Image
The ball is organised by the Black Sea Fleet in conjunction with civilian committees from Sevastopol itself, Russia says

Hundreds of officers and civilians were trained for months to take part in the dancing, which was heavily choreographed

Mark, there is a civil war in Ukraine after a coup organized by the West. That's why people die in Donbass. Also note that civilians are killed by the Ukrainian army in Donbass republics. What about Crimea, nobody was killed here by the Russians. Russia has protected Crimea.

It's very possible, many ukrainians dream to return to Russia like Crimea. There was an illegal coup in Ukraine in 2014, 2 biggest parties were forbidden, 48 people were burned alive in Odessa, many are arrested and killed, there is a civil war in Donbass. Armed gangs of radikals still control everything and even make threats to the new president. Of course, you are not informed about it and think that ukrainians dreamed to be an American colony.

Crimea was always Russian. Every building of the Crimea, even every stone - this is the history of Russia. Residents of Crimea wanted to return to Russia always. It is easy to make sure that you have to go there and talk to people. Everyone knows this, so Western journalists are not allowed to come to Crimea.

About Russian very often say that this is a nation of people who do not smile. Of the 20 photos there is none without smiles. Two questions. Can different people in 20 photos smile falsely? How many times have Russian officers danced in Paris? In the Crimea officer's ball the sixth year in a row.

VALENKI FOREVER -

George Zotov
